What is Mixed Up Media?

Image makers started altering their photographs by hand in the 1840’s. As much as the word “pristine” has been used in describing the condition of a print, so too have words like “altered” been associated with the medium.

The intervention of the artist’s hand with the photographic print is a strategy that has increased and gained wider acceptance in the age of digital photography.

This course looks at these “alterers” of the medium, discovers their intentions and misdeeds from the advent of photography up until this moment.  Students explore ways to alter their own work, combine media, draw, paint, crumple, collage, burn, stitch, and a whole host of tools and materials they can use to work their images.

For students already doing this, the course encourages more exploration. If those are new to mixed media processes, get ready to be a little messy.  Students develop and share their own transformed work in a critique-style setting.

Each class will start with a short history lesson on artists who combine other media with their work or otherwise hand alter it.
