The Online Portfolio Review

Overview

Instacrit is a direct one-on-one portfolio critique with Michael Foley via the Zoom Conferencing platform.  This initiative created in response to how we live, work and photograph in the new age of the COVID-19 virus. How do we continue to move our practice forward as photographers, when in person meetings, portfolio reviews and classes have become prohibited in most parts of the world?

How Do I Book an Appointment?

It’s easy! Go to the Calendly page below and sign up for an available appointment. A Zoom Conference link will be automatically generated and sent to you. Appointments can be booked up to 20 days in advance.
Appointments are offered in 20-minute and 45-minute sessions. When registering, please make sure you are signing up for the one you want.

What Do I need to Do in Order to Prepare?
Send up to 20 jpgs and a PDF Project Statement to instacrit212@gmail.com. Submissions can be made via DropBox or WeTransfer. Please limit each image to 1MG and your project statement to 150 words. This is the only way I can accept submissions. If materials are not submitted at least 24 hours in advance, the appointment will be canceled.

How Long is the Crit Session?

Sessions are available in 20-minute and 45-minute time frames . I will have already previewed your submission, so I can jump right in.

What if there are no open sessions available?
Sessions are available on a rolling basis. Please check back periodically for openings. For notifications on new openings, just sign up here for Instacrit Notifications and other news from The Photo Community.

What’s the Price?
The most important thing (besides staying healthy) we can do right now is to continue to connect and grow. I would like to provide this opportunity to as many people as possible. Through the end of November, the price for a 20-minute sessions is 50. The price for the 45-minute session is 90.

Completing this session will help you:

Who is the course for?

I recommend the 20-minute session for artists who are only looking for immediate feedback on their work.  The longer, 45-minute session is for those that would like to start a conversation on how their different projects fit together and how to bring them out to the right audience.

What people are saying

Sincere, motivational feedback along with actionable advice to help push yourself and your work to the next level. I genuinely can’t recommend bagging a few minutes of Michael's time enough!

The critique was worth every penny. It was filled with specific and useful information, especially regarding the editing and sequencing of my work for juried shows. I plan to do it again at some point in the not too distant future.

The 20 minutes I had with Michael were fabulous! His kind and gracious nature was a welcome change from the rush and flurry of many in person photo reviews. He focused on the larger ideas of the work and that allowed me to consider different ways of seeing arc of this project.

I'm a professional photographer who is just starting to enter the art world. Instacrit was very valuable to me because Michael helped me see things in my work that I had not. He also gave me the courage to keep going.

Michael Foley is a prepared, interesting, and a generous reviewer. I'd been following the gallery's Exhibition Lab for years, wishing I could apply...Impossible for me due to my location in the middle of the Pacific. The Instacrit gave me the opportunity for a great conversation about my work with the entire time spent focused on the conversation itself, rather than him seeing the work for the first time during the 20 minute session, as would happen at a traditional review session. If you get the opportunity to score a crit time with Michael, just do it. You will be very glad you did.

Michael's knowledge and background are complimented by his ease of communicating his ideas to provide a lot of information in a concise amount of time. His expertise allows for an understanding of diverse bodies of work with the ability to help push one's work further.

I've met with Michael twice. Once for a consultation in his NYC gallery; once via Instacrit. He was always very well prepared. He offered the fresh eyes and considered thoughts that I wanted to hear from a complete stranger and (hopefully) new friend.

Michael was generous with his time and insights, showing an easy skill at connecting with me as an artist and entering into the details of my work. He was able to offer encouragement and praise for images that moved him, and suggestions about ways to modify those that didn't. Michael has an uncanny knack for detail. He was able to reflect on and offer new composition/technical suggestions for images that I've already worked on for countless hours. He brings a practiced eye and wide photographic knowledge to the session.

Michael is one of the best reviewers I have ever worked with! I trust his judgment and guidance on my work, and his insightful comments draw from his vast knowledge of the fine art world. I would highly recommend Michael to any artist looking for very thoughtful and constructive feedback on their images. He is awesome!

Michael acts like the "secret sauce" to help make a project go "BAM!" I've enjoyed our conversations at portfolio reviews and during the Instacrit session immensely. Highly recommend!
